Multi-echelon inventory optimization across the networkOptimización multi-escalón a través de la red

Optimizing each warehouse on its own is the most expensive way to protect service. The network should hold one buffer against each uncertainty, in the right place.

01What it isQué es

Multi-echelon inventory optimization (MEIO) calculates inventory positions for all stocking points of a network at once — plants, central and regional DCs — instead of optimizing each node in isolation.

02Why it mattersPor qué importa

When each node protects itself, the network holds safety stock several times over against the same uncertainty. Optimizing jointly lets buffers sit where they protect the most service per unit of inventory, often upstream where demand is pooled (Graves and Willems, 2000 — Manufacturing and Service Operations Management). The gain depends on network structure and data quality, so it should be modeled, not assumed.

03How it is doneCómo se hace

1
Map the real network topology. Nodes, lanes, lead times and which demand stream each node serves.
2
Identify risk-pooling opportunities. Where aggregating demand upstream reduces total variability.
3
Run the multi-echelon optimization. Set service targets at customer-facing nodes and let the model place buffers.
4
Make the centralization trade-off explicit. Less inventory upstream vs. longer response time to the customer.
1
4

Start with a clean topology map and reliable demand history at each node. Pilot on one product family, compare the model's buffer placement with current practice, and explain the logic to planners before switching.

The bottom lineEn corto

Optimize the network, not the nodes. Map the topology, pool risk where it pays, set service at the customer-facing edge and let the model place the buffers.
