A dashboard that needs three minutes of explanation is useless for operational decisions.

01What it isQué es

KPI dashboard design is the discipline of choosing the few metrics each audience needs, ordering them by importance and showing each one against its target and trend so the reader knows within seconds whether to act.

02Why it mattersPor qué importa

Executives give a dashboard a minute or two; if the answer is not obvious in that time, the meeting falls back on opinions. A small, balanced set of measures lets leaders see the whole business at a glance instead of drowning in indicators (Kaplan and Norton, 1992 — Harvard Business Review), and dashboards work when they fit the key information on a single screen for monitoring at a glance (Few, 2006 — O'Reilly Media).

03How it is doneCómo se hace

1
Start from one question. Write the single question each dashboard must answer and who asks it — executive, manager or operator.
2
Show value, target, trend. Pair every KPI with its goal, a short trend and one company-wide traffic-light rule.
3
Test with real users. Watch two or three users answer the question on desktop and phone, then cut whatever slowed them down.
1
2
Muestra valor, meta y tendencia.

04The concept in depthEl concepto a fondo

📊Dashboard design: the difference between one that gets used and one that gets ignored›
A well-designed dashboard lets an executive see in a couple of minutes what needs attention. Poorly designed: more confusion than clarity, too many KPIs, colors without meaning, metrics without context.
📋The 5 principles of effective dashboard design›
(1) Hierarchy: the most important KPI top-left. The user answers "is everything OK?" in 10 seconds. (2) Context: current value + target + trend. An OTIF of 87% without a target is not actionable information. (3) Less is more: maximum 10–15 KPIs in the main view. (4) Visual alerts: traffic light with clear and consistent definition across the organization. (5) Mobile-first: many executives review dashboards on their phones.
🔢The supply chain dashboard pyramid›
Level 1 (Executive): 5–7 strategic KPIs. Weekly update. Level 2 (Managerial): 10–15 tactical KPIs by area. Daily update. Level 3 (Operational/Tower): 20–40 real-time metrics with alerts.
🏆Intermediate vs. Advanced›
Intermediate: builds dashboards following defined design standards.

Advanced: designs the dashboard hierarchy; defines design standards; implements the full pyramid with correct visualizations for each level.

📊Design the dashboard for one main question — answerable in <30 seconds›
The best dashboard clearly answers a single question.
🔢Validate the design with users before building it — 1 hour of interviews saves days of redesign›
Data analysts have very different visualization preferences from operations managers.
🔗Define the traffic light color glossary at the organizational level and apply it consistently›
A traffic light meaning ">90% = green" for OTIF and ">80% = green" for fill rate generates executive confusion.
📱The managerial dashboard must work on the phone — design mobile-first›
Many executives check dashboards on their phones before anywhere else.

Illustrative case: Executive dashboard redesign — FMCG company
Current dashboard: 48 KPIs, no target context, nobody reviews it regularly.
Principle appliedBeforeAfter
KPI reduction (less is more)48 KPIs · Nobody knows which to look at first7 executive KPIs: OTIF, fill rate, DIO, MAPE, logistics cost/revenue, stockout rate, logistics NPS
Target contextCurrent value without target or trend · "OTIF: 87%" doesn't say if it's good or badValue + target + 4-week trend · Green/yellow/red traffic light
Mobile-first for the managerial dashboardPC-only · Nobody reviews it outside the officeResponsive dashboard · Morning brief in WhatsApp at 7am
Result: Regular dashboard review: 20% → 100% of the management committee. Review time: 45 min → 8 min. Biggest impact: OTIF 87% vs. 93% target in red generated the first executive conversation about OTIF in 3 years.

07How it is measuredCómo se mide

📊Dashboard Adoption Rate %›
Dashboard Adoption Rate %
(Users who reviewed the dashboard at least once in the week / Total target users) × 100
Benchmark: >80% of target users with weekly review · <40% indicates the dashboard is not useful or accessible
⚠️ 20% adoption rate = the dashboard generates no value regardless of how much engineering work it cost.
⏱️Dashboard Time-to-Insight (minutes to answer the main question)›
Dashboard Time-to-Insight (minutes to answer the main question)
Average time to answer "is OTIF on target this week?"
Benchmark: <2 minutes for the executive dashboard main question
🔑 A dashboard requiring 15 minutes to answer the main question is not a decision dashboard — it is a visually formatted report.

The bottom lineEn corto

If your dashboard can't tell an executive in thirty seconds whether things are on target, it's a report, not a dashboard.
