01What it isQué es
DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DfSC (Design for Supply Chain) reviews are the structured, gated assessments during NPI that catch design choices producing downstream cost, complexity, or fragility — overly tight tolerances, single-source components, exotic materials, tooling that cannot scale, packaging that defeats the warehouse. They are the disciplined moment before tooling commits, when changing the design still costs nothing.
02Why it mattersPor qué importa
Design choices made in NPI determine the supply chain economics for the product's life. The cost-in-design literature consistently shows that 70–80% of total product cost is committed by the design — once tooling cuts, once suppliers qualify, once the AVL locks, the supply chain inherits the consequences whether they are economical or not (Ulrich & Eppinger, 2015 — Product Design and Development, foundational text). The DFM/DfSC review is the structured intervention that surfaces these consequences while the design can still change. The asymmetry is severe: a tolerance loosening that costs nothing to specify before tooling cuts saves $0.40 per unit forever; the same change after tooling cuts costs the program a tool spin and 8–14 weeks.

06What you would useQué se usa
Engineering owns the design; supply chain owns the consequences — and the DFM/DfSC review is the only forum where that asymmetry gets corrected. Gate the review formally, give operational functions veto power, use structured checklists, run DfSC alongside DFM, quantify every recommendation, and track findings to closure. The plants that run real DFM/DfSC eliminate the chronic operational issues before they exist; the plants that skip them treat the symptoms for years.
